What is facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure used to reduce the signs of ageing and improve the appearance of the face and jaw area. Facelift surgery can help to reverse the harmful effects of time, stress, and the elements. The procedure can help smooth deep wrinkles on the cheeks and between the nose and mouth and can help remove sagging skin from the jawline.

A facelift can be an effective way to improve appearance and boost self-confidence, but it is not for everyone. Patients whose skin is still relatively supple and who are in good overall health achieve the best results.

Some patients may find that they can attain their goals with less invasive, non surgical skin procedures such as platelet-rich plasma treatment or ultracel Skin Tightening, while others may be happier with their results if they combine facelift surgery with other procedures such as neck lift or forehead lift (also called brow lift).

Patients who understand both what facelift can do and what its limitations tend to be pleased with their results.

How is facelift surgery performed?

Facelift surgery seeks to remove excess fat, tighten underlying muscles, and smooth facial skin—all with minimal scarring. Usually an outpatient procedure, a facelift can be performed using general anaesthesia or a local anaesthesia and sedative combination.

The incisions used in the facelift are placed discreetly around the ears and within the hairline in order to minimize the visibility of scars following surgery. If the jawline or neck area is to be treated, a small incision under the chin may also be necessary.

Working through the incisions, the surgeon detaches the skin from the tissue below. Fat is removed and skin is stretched more tautly before the excess is trimmed away. Facial muscles can also be tightened if needed. Stitches are used to reattach the layers of skin and tissue and to close the incisions. The incisions within the hairline may be held together with special metal clasps.

After surgery, the patient’s head is usually bandaged, and a small tube may be used to drain fluid from behind the ear. The recovery process takes several weeks, but most patients report being up and around within a couple of days. Pain medication can help to make the healing period comfortable.
